About me and my
Passion for Authentic Indian Food
I was born in Kanpur, raised in Kolkata with my roots in Kerala- south India. Having widely travelled across the length and breadth of India, I now live in Peterborough.
Cooking has always been my hobby, my passion. I consider it as an art, my inspiration has been my Amma and Ammama (mother and grandma). They were strong women, who created spectacular magic at every mealtime in their warm smoky kitchens.
Over the years I have collected recipes, some traditional, some classics and some that are my very own. My interest lies in playing with simple ingredients that are easily available, fresh produce and exotic spices that are combined to create a sensory explosion quite unlike any other cuisine.
Crafting curries evolved from my passion for cooking and my profession as a teacher. I’m a home chef, recipe developer and enjoy creating magic in the kitchen. I strive to simplify Indian cooking to help it reach many more kitchens in the UK.
I firmly believe that to develop skills and knowledge in various types of cooking you need to constantly experience and expose yourself to it. Therefore, I spend a lot of time traveling across India exploring spices, cooking methods, and cooking for friends and family.
What our participants say
LI attended a vegetarian course with my Dad & had a fantastic experience. Cathy is a natural hostess/teacher & took the time to explain about the properties of each ingredient, regional differences, how to serve and much more besides. There is a great balance between the teaching element and the ‘hands on’ approach. The food we produced was delicious and we all sat down together to enjoy our dishes. I came away feeling much more confident about using different ingredients & will certainly use the recipes I was given. I highly recommend Crafting Curries and hope to attend another course with Cathy soon.
I attended a vegan cookery course last Saturday and had the most wonderful day. Cathy is a fantastic hostess and very knowledgeable about all of the ingredients used and why they are used too. I was made to feel right at home and it was very ‘hands on’ which I loved. We made so many dishes and each and every one of them was delicious and I especially loved the little ‘dinner party’ at the end and what a surprise when Cathy presented a pre-made dessert for us to enjoy.
I would recommend the courses to everyone and I look forward to attending another one soon. Thanks Cathy!
I have just had the most fabulous day with Mum and Sis at Crafting Curries with Catherine George! We had a day learning how to cook Indian Street Food including how to cook Pooris, Papdi Chaat and my favourite, proper onion and spinach bhajis! Yum yum yum yum yum. Lots of other stuff too. Cathy was so attentive and thoughtful, even catering for my gluten free sister at the last minute (I forgot to mention it until yesterday). Cathy’s incredibly knowledgeable and very patient and I definitely recommend her to you if cooking curry is your thing (or even if it isn’t). I bought these sessions as Xmas gift vouchers for my mum and sis so we could spend quality time together… and we certainly did that. Cathy had done all the laborious peeling and chopping in advance so that we could get on with the more fun side of cooking. I learnt loads about spices and how and when they go in the dishes. Then we ate the lot … well what we could manage
I booked a private class with Cathy as a surprise for two friends and what a good choice it was. From the moment we arrived Cathy welcomed us and put us at our ease, any apprehension we felt about understanding spices and technique were quickly dispelled. Cathy had a light-hearted and kindly approach, she had foreseen our lack of experience and guided us expertly.
We were very impressed with her preparation, we were given elegant folders with copies of the recipes we would be making, everything was chopped and weighed and ready to go; this enabled us to make seven different dishes, much to the delight of both our brains and our tums! My friends do not like their food to be too spicy but Cathy showed us that spicy does not mean hot, rather it is layered flavours, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.. In addition, the dishes we made were healthy. What more can you ask for?
I enjoyed it so much that I am going back for another class.
Absolutely would recommend! Learnt so much about Indian cuisine while making gorgeous dishes. Couldn’t wait to eat the entire time! Cathy is so lovely and friendly, really enjoyed her class. Couldn’t have asked for a better Indian cooking teacher! Was perfect for a beginner like me, and we made so much food in so little time! Small classes, so have a really fun and friendly feel. 10/10 would go again and learn some more recipes!
I had a really great time learning to create dishes with Crafting Curries. As a student, I’m always looking for new things to cook, and in my class with Cathy, I was taught how to prepare a range of dishes, from a simple, quick and cheap lentil dal to a more luxurious butter chicken. I was so surprised at how easy it was to create incredibly tasty dishes! I would recommend Crafting Curries to anyone wishing to explore Indian food further, as Cathy is the perfect teacher.
I went to Cathy’s kitchen to learn to make curries in general and feel more confident with using spices! She is brilliant at explaining why and how a spice reacts to food and its healthy property. All info. You don’t find easily in recipe books! So, after spending a lovely evening cooking and eating with my husband, I can master a simple but very tasty dal curry and I know how to cook rice perfectly, make chapatis and pakoras confidently.
Thank you Cathy xxxx
This was a great way to spend an evening – time well spent. Cathy took us through the steps to create pakoras, onion bhajis and then a lentil dal, with potato and aubergine accompaniment. She talked us through the qualities of all the spices and ingredients, then took us into the prepping, cooking and serving – paying real attention to tips and details to give dishes an authentic flavour. I used to think my curries were ok, but with Cathy’s tips for “tempering”, they have gone to the next level. All very relaxed and fun!!!!
